Saturday, May 31 was Aviation Day, an Air Cadet event hosted to introduce youth to the aviation industry. My squadron was invited to send a group of cadets to this event and I volunteered to be the cadet leader.
We were given a 15 minuter ride in a Pascan Jetstream. It was a small plane which could hold up to 19 passengers. The pilots were pretty chill so they did some simple maneuvers to simulate a roller coaster experience. Other activities included a kite-building lesson, a conference (where the presenter did not show up) and a scavenger hunt for Officers. Many booths were set up in the hanger where cadets could learn about Aviation schools, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, flying opportunities in Cadets and the Royal Military College. A remote controlled aircraft club was set up in one location. They demonstrated several remote controlled planes and a quad-copter shaped like a flying saucer.
One officer was especially uncool. He was a stickler for following redundant rules and making everything seem perfect. He tried to push this sense of urgency onto me by remarking "Let's go Warrant, you need to step up". Although we were always on time, the officer would not trust the cadets to come back on their own. This was placed onto me and I was made to look for cadets who were not early to a meeting place when they would have arrived on time anyways.
What convinced me I was not completely at fault was what happened near the end of the trip. A few cadets needed to go to the washroom, so I told them to move to the front of the bus during a stoplight. The officer saw them get up and started to yell at them for moving during the bus ride. They explained that they had to go to the washroom. The officer then decided to yell at them further for "drinking too much water".
